Plans, prices, and model names below were checked on Oct 17, 2026, on Claude's official pricing page.
Someone in a workshop raised her hand last month and said, "Okay, everyone keeps telling me to use Claude. But what actually is it?" Half the room nodded. And honestly? That is the smartest question you can ask before you spend a single minute (or dollar) on a new tool.
So let's answer it. In the next five minutes you'll know what Claude is, who makes it, what it is really good at for a business, what it costs, and exactly how to start today. No tech background needed. Let's get into it.
The short answer
Claude is an AI assistant. You type (or talk) to it like you would a really smart coworker, and it writes, thinks, plans, researches, and organizes for you. It can draft your emails, read a 40-page contract and tell you what matters, turn a messy brain dump into a clean plan, and help you write marketing that actually sounds like you.
It works in your web browser, on your computer, and on your phone. And there is a free plan, so you can try it today without pulling out a credit card.
Who makes Claude?
Claude is made by Anthropic, an AI safety and research company. Anthropic is set up as a Public Benefit Corporation, which means its stated purpose is developing AI responsibly for the long-term benefit of people, not just profit.
Why does that matter to you as a business owner? Because when you paste in client notes, your pricing, or your business plan, you want a tool built by a company that takes safety and trust seriously. That is one of the big reasons I chose to build my business around Claude, and why I became an Official Claude Partner.
What Claude is really good at (for a business)
You'll see a lot of flashy demos online. Here is what actually moves the needle for everyday business owners.
1. Writing that sounds like a human
This is where Claude shines. Emails, social posts, website copy, proposals, newsletters, follow-ups. Give it a few examples of your own writing and it will match your voice surprisingly well. People tell me all the time that Claude's writing feels less "robot" than other tools.
2. Reading long stuff so you don't have to
Drop in a contract, a long PDF, a meeting transcript, or a pile of customer reviews and ask, "What do I need to know?" You'll get the important points in seconds instead of an hour of skimming.
3. Thinking through decisions
Should you raise your prices? Launch a new offer? Hire your first contractor? Claude is a great thinking partner. Ask it to lay out the pros and cons, poke holes in your plan, or play the role of a skeptical customer.
4. Turning chaos into a plan
Paste your messy to-do list or a voice-memo transcript and say, "Turn this into a plan for my week." It is one of the simplest, most satisfying things you can do on day one.
5. Building tools and pages
Claude can also create things you can see and use, like a simple calculator, a checklist, a slide deck, or a document, right inside the chat. You describe what you want, it builds it. No coding required.
6. Connecting to the tools you already use
Claude can connect to apps like your email, calendar, and files so it can help with real work instead of you copying and pasting all day. If you want a starting point, read my guide to the first connectors to set up.
Where can you use Claude?
According to Claude's download page, you can use it in a lot of places:
- Your web browser at claude.ai. Nothing to install.
- The desktop app for Mac and Windows (plus a Linux beta).
- Your phone, with a mobile app.
- Inside Chrome with the Claude in Chrome extension.
- Inside Microsoft 365 with add-ins for Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook (Outlook is in beta).
- Slack, if your team lives there.
My honest recommendation? Start with the desktop app. It feels like a real tool on your computer instead of one more browser tab. I wrote about why in browser Claude vs the desktop app.
Claude's models, explained simply
You'll notice Claude lets you pick a "model." Think of these like different employees on the same team. As of today, the latest models listed on Claude's site are:
- Haiku 5.5: the fast one. Great for quick, simple tasks.
- Sonnet 5.5: the everyday workhorse. Smart, quick, and the one most people use most of the time.
- Opus 5.5: the deep thinker. Use it for big, complicated work like strategy, long documents, or tricky problems.
- Fable 5.1: also on the latest-models list. Check Claude's pricing page to see which plans include it.
Here is the good news: you don't need to overthink this. Start with the default, and only switch when a task feels too big or too small. The free plan includes Sonnet and Haiku. Paid plans add more models, including Opus.
What does Claude cost?
Here is the quick version from the official pricing page:
- Free: $0. Chat on web, desktop, and mobile, web search, memory, and up to 5 Projects.
- Pro: $20/month, or $17/month if you pay for the year ($200 up front). More usage, more models including Opus, unlimited Projects, Claude in Chrome, and Claude for Microsoft 365.

Most solo business owners I work with are perfectly happy on Pro. If you want the full breakdown, I walked through every plan in What Does Claude Cost?
How to start with Claude today (in 10 minutes)
Here is exactly what I'd do if I were starting from zero this afternoon.
Step 1: Make your free account
Go to claude.ai and sign up. Then download the desktop app so it lives on your computer.
Step 2: Tell Claude who you are
Copy and paste this into your very first chat:
"I run a [type of business] that helps [who you serve] with [what you do]. My customers usually struggle with [problem]. Ask me 5 questions so you understand my business better, then tell me the 3 tasks you could help me with this week."
Answer its questions. You'll be amazed at how specific it gets.
Step 3: Give it one real task
Pick something you've been putting off. A follow-up email. A product description. A social post. Ask Claude to draft it, then tell it what to change. "Shorter." "Warmer." "Sound more like me." That back-and-forth is where the magic happens.
Step 4: Turn on memory
Memory lets Claude remember useful things about you between chats, so you don't have to repeat yourself. It is included on the free plan. Here's why I think memory is the first setting to turn on.
Step 5: Make your first Project
Create a Project for one area of your business, like "Marketing" or "Client Emails." Add your instructions and a few examples. Now every chat in that Project starts out already knowing your business.
Claude vs ChatGPT: do I need both?
Short answer: no, you don't need both to get started. Both are great tools. Many business owners prefer Claude for writing, reading long documents, and thoughtful planning. If you want the side-by-side, read Claude vs ChatGPT for small business: 8 real jobs side by side.
My advice: pick one, learn it well, and get real results before you go tool shopping again. Shiny-object syndrome is the number one thing that keeps business owners stuck.
