Hi friends 🧡 This week the ground moved a little under a few tools you probably use. Google is swapping Gems for skills, Claude Cowork moved your tasks to the cloud, and Meta is about to change how your existing ads look unless you say no. It all rewards the people who own their own setup. Let's get into it. Here's what matters.

Claude's docs, slides and designs are now free on every plan

What happened

On October 8, Anthropic took Docs, Slides and Design out of beta and made them available on every Claude plan, including Free.

What it means for you

You can now ask Claude for a proposal, a one-page flyer or a short client deck and get a real document back, not a wall of chat text, even on the free plan. The new Dashboards and Motion betas are paid-plan extras most solo owners can skip.

Do this

Ask Claude for a one-page "how we work" sheet for new clients, then export it and see how it looks.

Google is replacing Gems with skills in Gemini

What happened

On October 13, Google started rolling out skills in the Gemini app for personal Google accounts and Workspace customers, with the rollout finishing by mid-November. Google's release notes say skills will soon replace Gems, and existing Gems will be moved over automatically. The same day, Google added a tasks mode that keeps working while you are away, for Google AI Pro ($19.99 a month) and Ultra subscribers.

What it means for you

If you built a Gem for your captions or your client emails, it is not disappearing, but it is changing shape. This is the second time in a month a big AI company has moved the furniture (OpenAI stopped new custom GPTs in September).

Do this

Open each Gem you use and copy its instructions into a plain document you own, before the move happens.

Claude Cowork tasks now run in the cloud

What happened

As of October 6, new Cowork tasks on Claude Pro and Max plans run in the cloud instead of only on your computer. New scheduled tasks run in the cloud too. Your folders stay on your computer, and Claude only reaches the folders you have connected, through the desktop app while it is open.

What it means for you

Good news: new scheduled tasks no longer need your computer awake to run. The thing to check is what you have given Cowork access to. If it can see your whole home folder, it can see your client contracts and tax files too.

Do this

Make one dedicated folder for Cowork, move in only what it needs, and point Cowork at that folder instead of your whole computer.

Google is sending more clicks to real websites, and testing a spot for official sites

What happened

On October 15, Google said it is putting more links inside AI Mode and AI Overviews, showing them higher in answers, and testing a dedicated section at the top for official websites.

What it means for you

When someone asks Google about your business by name, your own website has a better shot at being the first link they see. That only helps if your site clearly says who you are, what you do, and where you do it.

Do this

Search your business name in Google's AI Mode and see which site it sends people to. If it is not yours, fix your About page first.

Meta may switch on "product browsing" for your running ads on October 28

What happened

Advertisers say Meta notified them on October 14 that it will turn on product browsing for existing ads by default starting October 28, unless they opt out. It lets your ad show shoppable products from your catalog. Meta has not published a help article yet, so this comes from advertiser notices.

What it means for you

If you run Facebook or Instagram ads and have a product catalog connected, an ad you carefully tested could start looking different a month before Black Friday. Service businesses with no catalog can ignore this one.

Do this

Check your email from Meta and your Ads Manager notifications this week, and decide on purpose whether you want it on or off.

Someone used an AI-made receipt to get paid for a purse

What happened

A western wear store in Alice, Texas, says a fake receipt that looked AI-generated was used to get a warranty payout on a purse. The distributor accepted it before anyone noticed the address was wrong and the store did not even carry that purse.

What it means for you

You can no longer spot a fake by the typos. If you handle returns, warranties or expense receipts, the check has to be against your own records, not against how real the paper looks.

Do this

Make it a rule: no return, warranty payout or reimbursement until the sale shows up in your own sales system.

Jam's take

Look at this week as a whole. Gems are becoming skills. Cowork moved to the cloud. Custom GPTs stopped in September. Meta is changing your ads by default. Every AI company is going to keep moving the furniture, and that is fine, as long as your business doesn't live inside their furniture. The popular advice is still "build a custom GPT for your business." I'd say build a context folder instead: a few plain documents about who you serve, how you talk, what you sell and how you like things done. Drop that folder into a Claude Project, a Gemini skill or whatever comes next, and you are set up again in ten minutes. The tools are rented. Your context is yours.

One thing to try before Monday

Open a new folder called "My business brain." Copy in your best Gem, custom GPT or Project instructions, plus one page on who your ideal client is and one page of writing you love that sounds like you. Ten minutes, and the next time a tool changes, you are not starting from zero.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use Claude's Docs, Slides and Design on the free plan?

Yes. On October 8, 2026, Anthropic took Docs, Slides and Design out of beta and made them available on every Claude plan, including Free. Claude Dashboards and Claude Motion are still in beta and limited to paid plans.

What happens to my Gemini Gems now that skills are here?

Google says skills will replace Gems for custom instructions and that existing Gems will be moved to skills automatically. Skills started rolling out in the Gemini app on October 13, 2026, with the rollout expected to finish by mid-November.

Does Claude Cowork run on my computer or in the cloud?

Since October 6, 2026, new Cowork tasks on Claude Pro and Max plans run in the cloud. Your folders stay on your computer, and Claude only reaches the folders you have connected, through the desktop app while it is open.

How do I get my website to show up in Google's AI Overviews?

Make sure your site plainly states your business name, what you do, who you serve and where. On October 15, 2026, Google said it is adding more links to AI Overviews and AI Mode and testing a dedicated section for official websites.

How can a small business spot an AI-generated fake receipt?

Don't rely on how the receipt looks. Check every return, warranty or expense claim against your own sales records and inventory before paying, and look closely at addresses, dates and items you don't actually sell.
