How to use ChatGPT for Google Sheets

Sep 27, 2023

A Quick Guide to get Started!

  1. Installation: Go to your Google Sheets, click on "Add-ons" > "Get add-ons", and search for "GPT". Click on it and install.

  2. API Key Setup: OpenAI's API is not free, so you need to create an API key. To do this, create an account on beta.openai.com and generate an API key.

  3. Enter API Key in Sheets: Go to "Extensions" > "GPT for Sheets" > "Set API Key". Paste your API key here and click "OK".

  4. Enable GPT Function: Once the API key is set, you can enable the GPT function on any spreadsheet. This allows you to use the GPT function in your sheets.

  5. Use GPT Function: The simplest way to use the GPT function is to write a prompt in a cell, for example, "write a tagline for an ice cream shop", and then use the GPT function on that cell.

  6. Adjusting Creativity: The default 'temperature' parameter is set to zero, which instructs the AI to not be very creative. You can adjust this parameter to increase the AI's creativity. A temperature of 1 is the maximum.

  7. Using Prompts with Different Cells: You can create prompts using different cells. For example, you can write different taglines for shops in different locations by joining the cells in the final result.

  8. Translation: You can use the GPT function to translate text. For example, you can write "Translate in Spanish" in one cell, reference the text you want to translate in another cell, and use the GPT function to perform the translation.

  9. Conversational Interface: If you want to have a conversation like you have on ChatGPT, you can do so by keeping the context of the previous prompts into the last one. This can be done by concatenating all the previous prompts when calling the GPT function again.

  10. Feedback: If you have any feedback, you can provide it by clicking on "Provide Feedback" in the GPT for Sheets extension.Generating Multiple Proposals: If you want to generate multiple proposals, you can simply drag the formula down. This will generate different outputs for each row.

Ways to use ChatGPT for Sheets

  1. Concatenating Prompts: You can concatenate prompts using the Ampersand (&) sign. This is useful when you want to combine information from different cells into a single prompt.

  2. Adjusting Temperature for Creativity: The 'temperature' parameter controls the creativity of the AI's responses. A higher temperature (up to 1) results in more creative responses, while a lower temperature (down to 0) results in more deterministic responses.

  3. Translating Text: You can use the GPT function to translate text into different languages. Simply write "Translate in [Language]" in one cell, reference the text you want to translate in another cell, and use the GPT function to perform the translation.

  4. Creating Conversational Interfaces: You can create a conversational interface similar to ChatGPT by keeping the context of the previous prompts in the current one. This can be done by concatenating all the previous prompts with the current one when calling the GPT function.

  5. Generating Content in Different Formats: You can use the GPT function to generate content in different formats, such as songs, jokes, or blog post ideas. Simply write the type of content you want to generate in one cell (e.g., "Make it into a song"), and use the GPT function on that cell.

  6. Providing Feedback: If you have any feedback or issues, you can provide it by clicking on "Provide Feedback" in the GPT for Sheets extension. This will open a Google form where you can submit your feedback.

Remember, the power of GPT for Sheets lies in its flexibility. You can adjust the prompts, temperature, and other parameters to get the AI to generate the kind of content you need.
